Das erfolgreichste Werk von Heinrich Mann ist "Der Untertan". An dem Roman arbeitete er zwischen 1906 und 1914. Der Vorabdruck in einer Illustrierten fiel der Zensur zum Opfer und wurde mit Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges unterbunden. Nach Kriegsende wurde der Roman fast hunderttausendmal in Deutschland verkauft.Der Untertan ist die Geschichte des Diederich Heßling. Dieser erfolgreiche Machtmensch ist extrem anpassungsfähig. Er arrangiert sich mit den kulturellen oder politischen Strömungen seiner Zeit, wenn diese nur Sicherheit oder Gewinn versprechen. Dem damaligen Kaiser Wilhelm II. ist er treu ergeben, bis in die nach oben gezwirbelten Schnurrbartspitzen hinein. Heßling ist eine typisch deutsche Figur seiner Zeit, die nach oben buckelt und nach unten tritt. In einer bitteren Satire erzählt Heinrich Mann über die wilhelminische Epoche und analysiert die Situation der Vorkriegszeit.
